Researchers from Ghana and Germany are advancing plans
to establish a pilot facility in Ghana that will chemically
recycle textile and plastic waste into reusable raw materials.
The project will focus on processing polyethylene terephthalate
(PET) waste, including colored and multilayer textile and plastic
materials that are often difficult to recycle. Using chemical
recycling technology, the facility is expected to recover key PET
feedstocks such as terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol,
with conversion rates of up to 97%.
The initiative aims to address Ghana’s growing textile waste
challenge while supporting circular economy goals and creating
new opportunities for sustainable resource recovery.
