Karl Mayer develops innovative fabrics for bulletproof vests

In response to growing demand for high-performance
personal protective equipment, Karl Mayer’s Technical
Textiles unit has unveiled cutting-edge multiaxial noncrimp fabrics using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres, designed to enhance comfort,
reduce weight, and maintain ballistic protection in bulletproof vests. Using its UD 700 spreading machine and
COP MAX 5 warp knitting system, Karl Mayer produces
single-layer tapes. These are laminated with polymer film
to ensure stability without chemicals or water, streamlining the process and improving sustainability. Karl Mayer’s
approach eliminates the need for resin-based bonding and
manual stacking, reducing labour and energy use. As safety
demands escalate worldwide, the company’s innovations set
new benchmarks in lightweight, high-performance textile
protection.
