A new UN-backed study has found that 96% of second-hand
clothing imported into Uganda and Tanzania is suitable for
reuse, challenging claims that Africa is being used as a dumping
ground for textile waste.
The research highlights the important role of the second-hand
clothing trade in supporting affordable fashion and employment
across East Africa. In Uganda, where average daily income is
about $2.68, a new garment can cost up to six days of disposable
income, while a typical second-hand item costs around $2.70,
making it a more accessible option for consumers.
The findings suggest that the second-hand clothing sector
continues to provide economic and social benefits while
extending the lifespan of garments and supporting circular
fashion practices.
